Chapter 23

Aria

“Aria, honey. Why are you back so soon?” Papa says as he hugs me close in front of the house. I am so glad to be home again. I need him so badly to help me figure this all out.

“Papa, I am so glad to be home,” I tell him before pulling back. “The trip to the village was fine, and I got everything I needed.”

“But you’re home so soon,” he says, surprised. “I thought you were going to stay a while. To meet new people.”

My face crumples and tears come, unbidden, rushing down my face. Papa pulls me back into his arms and strokes my hair. I can hear his heart pound as he presses my head to his chest, and he whispers, “Did someone hurt you?”

I think of my run-in with Tristin and him chasing me, but I don’t want to alarm him. I got away, and I am home now.

I push him away and smile at him as best as I can. “No, Papa. Something strange happened on my trip, but nothing that bad, I promise you,” I hurry to assure him. “I need to tell you all about it, but you have to keep an open mind.”

His shoulders relax, but he looks at me curiously. “Aria, I am always here to listen, you know that. Come on to the house, and we will talk.”

“Thank you, Papa.” I breathe out deeply to calm myself, and we make ourselves comfortable on the porch with a cup of the whiskey from Hoarse. Papa looks at me strangely when I suggest it, as he knows that I don’t normally drink, but he only raises his eyebrow at me and fills my cup.

“I knew it was a little risky to send you to the village on your own, but I thought the wolves would keep you safe. Where are they anyway?” he asks, looking around again for them.

“They will be here soon,” I say. “I sent them away because I wanted to be alone with you for a while.”

“Well, okay, then.” He smiles at me softly. “Tell me what’s going on, Aria. You seem distressed, and I don’t like seeing you this way.”

I breathe deeply and contemplate my father. He is just a man, but he has seen more in life than many. Maybe he will have an open mind. Or maybe he’ll try to kill Collin. I know that I need to take the risk and decide that now is better than later. “What I am about to tell you is hard to believe, but I need you to just listen.” My tone is stronger than I feel, and I am glad. I need Papa to understand that this is important to me. “You’re going to think I am crazy, but everything is true, and there is proof to back it up.”

“I will listen as you like,” he assures me again.

“The first night on my journey to the village, an old woman appeared to us. She was a Mage, Papa, a real, live Mage.
